My gardening blog.
Oh, how I wish calla lilies were perennial here in PA. I store the bulbs in the basement over the winter, but I'm not always successful. I love them though. It's my birthday 4 weeks after yours ... now what should I ask my husband to buy me? ... P. x
Pam, I planted many white Callas in my side garden 2 years ago and are so big and beautiful. I was expecting them to be even better this year; however, since I posted this, I found out that my landlord wants to pave over my side garden so it will be destroyed along with all those beautiful white Callas that are dormant right now. I am devastated. But it is my fault for planting in the ground when I live in a rental. Thankfully, the yellow Callas that I recently grew I planted in a pot! So at least those will be saved. And the ones my husband is getting me for my birthday will also go in a pot. I will just have to get new white ones in the Fall. Yes - you must decided what to ask him for for your birthday! :)
Danielle how lovely your calla lilies are. I always have loved this flower but like Pam they are not perennial here and I am not good overwintering them here. I envy your ability to plant flowers now and keep a garden going all year.
Donna, that is the one thing I do enjoy about California... having a garden all year. But there are so many things that I see other gardeners growing that I cannot. Like Peonies for instance. My parents in Pennsylvania still have them in their yard from when I was growing up. Each year they bloom and are beautiful. I could never have them here... it's too hot! And Lily of the Valley..it grew like a weed back East but here, I planted the pips in a pot in February and I did get those to bloom, but the second batch of pips I planted later when the weather was warner and they only put up green.. no flowers. I still have them in a pot. I'm hoping when the weather cools off that maybe they will flower but we shall see.
I'm a big fan of the sultry, black calla lilies too. I bought my first ones from Trader Joe's of all places! Planted them out in the ground, and they have been back every year since. I hope your hubby finds you some. And Happy Birthday! :)
Trader Joe's? Sometimes you just never know what you'll find... I like to save plants from the .99 Cent store too! I just commented back to Pam that I had lovely white Callas in my side garden that bloom in the Fall and they are so big and beautiful... But my landlord just put a letter on my door that they will be paving over my side garden so that is the end of that!
They look really nice and quite unusual. Fingers crossed you receive them for your birthday :-) .
I hope so but if not, I will have something to look forward to. :)
